Flinders Reef Checkout Dive
A group of GUE divers head to Flinders Reef, just of the North Eastern tip of Moreton Island, on the 16th December 2012 for a checkout dive. The conditions were close to ideal with calm surface conditions, warm and clear water and only a very mild current.
Final GUE Fundies classes for the year
We’re running two more GUE Fundamentals classes before Christmas—a great opportunity to improve and expand your dive skills and experience before the summer holidays.
We have two classes scheduled, starting on 9 November and 7 December. Each class runs for two consecutive weekends.
Course Overview
GUE Fundamentals is the gateway to all GUE training, designed to cultivate the essential techniques required for all good diving practice, irrespective of level or environment. It helps recreational divers advance basic skills, developing more comfort, confidence, and competence in the water and provides more experienced divers with the necessary tools to get the most out of future technical or cave diver training.
Prerequisites
To enrol you must be 16 years of age, able to swim 15 metres underwater on a breath hold, surface swim 275 metres in less than 14 minutes and hold an open water certification from a recognized training agency. Additionally, all GUE divers are required to be non–smokers. See GUE Standards (2.1.4) for a full listing.
What’s Involved?
The course is conducted over an intensive 4 day period, including a minimum of 10 hours of academics and 6 dives. GUE Fundamentals is designed to introduce divers to the basic GUE concepts, building competency in important areas such as buoyancy, trim, propulsion, teamwork, diver rescue and the GUE equipment configuration.
Core Skills
Propulsion techniques, including helicopter turns and backward kick; valve drills; out-of-gas drills; ascents; surface marker buoy deployment; diver rescue; unconscious diver recovery; buoyancy and trim; teamwork and communication.
Why Do GUE Fundamentals?
GUE Fundamentals provides the most exacting fundamental diver training available and introduces you to a world wide network of like minded underwater explorers. Whether intending to take technical or cave training, or simply to improve your recreational diving, there is no better way to become a comfortable, confident and competent diver.

JP describes day 1:
We started with a course overview and the importance of project documentation followed by project management. 2 dives in the afternoon focusing on skill refinement while using camera equipment and site orientation. Now team homework building the project plan and defining object goals. Specifics on photo & video equipment and techniques tomorrow.
Good luck!

Seaway Skills Dive
Pieter Truter and Craig McVean head to the Gold Coast Seaway to practise drills and skills. It was not all “work” though. There were big schools of fish around the Sand Pipe and a large Stone Fish to entertain.
A late afternoon dive at the Gold Coast Seaway to practise drills and skills with Craig McVean in preparation for GUE Tech 1 later this month.
